“Okay, what’s on the tape?”

“Well, I fast-forwarded to the last two hours…”

“And?”

“I’m getting to it, don’t rush me.”

“Don’t yank my chain, Bellows. Spit it out.”

“Okay, nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing, nada. Today’s taping must have taped over what we’re looking for.”

“Crap. Are you sure?”

“Yeah. The only person who went near the first aid items was the pharmacist, and he’d hardly be stealing from his own store, now would he?”

“No, guess not.” Still… “Show me that section anyway.” She leaned forward and studied the not-so-great-quality tape.

“See there’s the first aid aisle,” Kit pointed and hit rewind. “Okay here’s the date/time marker. Nine-fifteen. The cashier is busy with a customer up front.”

“There’s Kurt,” Rilla said. “He walked into the aisle, hesitated a minute or so, before walking out again. The shelves are too high for the camera angle. I can’t see what he’s doing.”

“Well, he’s carrying something in front of him. His arms are bent at the elbow.”

“Wait,” Rilla said. “Right there, slow it down just as he goes behind the counter.”

The detective reversed the tape and then slo-moed the scene in question.

“Yeah, he’s definitely picked something up from the first aid items, but there could be a dozen reasons.”

“Sure, but if you want me to, I’d be glad to go over and check out his body for dog bites.”

With an eye roll, Rilla laughed. “I’m sure you would. I’ll take care of it myself.”

“No fair. Do you have to monopolize the only two eligible men in town?”

“Kurt’s an old friend. I don’t want to piss him off. He’s an extra pair of eyes. Finger on the pulse of the town.”

“Uh-huh. Sure. You’re greedy, Rilla. Mac Callahan and Kurt Jensen.” Kit shook her head. “I guess I’m going to have to move to Nashville if I’m gonna meet anyone who hasn’t fallen under your spell.”

“Very funny.” She tossed a paper wad at her detective. “Now get out of here and find me a burglar with a dog bite.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Kit snapped a cheeky salute and hurried from the office.

As far as Rilla was concerned, Kit could have both men and good riddance. On second thought, she could have Kurt.
